Let’s start with what some could consider the most important new face with the team, offensive coordinator Todd Haley. Most recently working with Ben Roethlisberger in Pittsburgh, Haley is the first offensive coordinator for the Browns since Hue Jackson took over as the head coach. In a post on clevelandbrowns.com, Haley simply states that although he has worked with Roethlisberger in Pittsburgh and Kurt Warner in Arizona, he feels that the quarterback room in Cleveland is the best he’s been a part of; A quarterback room with Tyrod Taylor as the starter, Baker Mayfield as the backup and Drew Stanton as the veteran presence to help Mayfield acclimate to the NFL.
To help out the new Browns quarterback room, Dorsey also went about acquiring Pro Bowl receiver Jarvis Landry from the Dolphins and running back Carlos Hyde for the offense. Cleveland will also have receiver Josh Gordon, tight end David Njoku and running back Duke Johnson Jr. returning after Dorsey signed Johnson to a new deal. Haley seems to have only great things to say about the three quarterbacks.
Haley said that Taylor has been establishing himself as the leader of the offense, further solidifying his role as the starter at this time. Also on a good note, Mayfield has been making great amounts of progress acclimating to the NFL. Haley added that the former Oklahoma quarterback is showing exactly what is expected from the first-overall draft pick. There is even praise for third-string quarterback Stanton. At 33 years old and entering his 11th season, Stanton even received praise from Haley who complimented the quarterback’s experience earned by being a backup to Carson Palmer for the last five seasons.
While competition is in the nature of all of the players and coaches, fans should be extremely excited to know that everyone is embracing their roles on the team. Stanton reiterated that earlier this week while talking with the media. The 2018 season is right around the corner. Time will only tell if these new changes are the correct changes.
